Victorious champions of EuropeWell, I was wrong on two counts. Firstly I thought the Germans would equalise (because they always do against England) and secondly I did not think there would be an even bigger party than after the semi-final win - but there was!

After three weeks, six undefeated matches - and scoring twelve goals and only conceding three - it was a justified celebration.

Following three long minutes of extra-time, the final whistle blew and it finished 1-0 to España. Then, the celebrations really began. Torres and Sergio RamosThousands of people left the bars and their homes to join together in one singing, cheering, flag-waving throng in the seafront area of Torrevieja. Young and old, male and female, everyone wanted to share the moment of success and glory. The Spanish know how to party and after this historic win, why not?

The area was sealed off from vehicles - which were racing around other parts of the town with people hanging precariously out, waving and smiling at those stood on the pavements. I saw a German registered Mercedes sports car (what else?). I smiled at the driver with an enquiring look and he just shrugged his shoulders as if to say ‘Even we can’t win them all, so why not join in the fun?’

A night for everyone to enjoyAnd that said it all really - a night for everyone to enjoy. It has been a fantastic football tournament with the best team winning. The victorious team will fly home to Madrid today and I have no doubt that not much work will be done today when they receive a hero’s welcome.

What next? The World Cup of course (South Africa 2010). We might all have just recovered from this win by then.
